Preserving family recordings for Strathaven households
A collection gathered over decades can include school plays, holidays, celebrations, local events and everyday moments that were never recorded anywhere else. The original tapes may still be important even if the equipment needed to play them has become scarce. A digital copy can make the footage easier to view, back up and share, while keeping the original media available to you.
Because Strathaven is outside the immediate East Kilbride town centre, check your route and allow time for the journey before setting off. The directions button opens a route planner to the actual business address. If you have many tapes, consider contacting us beforehand with the approximate number and formats so you can ask about the job before making the trip.
Which services may suit your collection?
The right option depends on the format and condition of the original media. These links lead to service information on the main East Kilbride website. If you cannot identify a cassette, choose “Not sure” in the enquiry form rather than guessing.
Service availability, output compatibility, pricing and turnaround should be confirmed for your particular items. The list above reflects the relevant service information currently linked from this website.
Prepare your tapes before travelling from Strathaven
For a family archive, think about how you will use the copies after transfer. DVD may suit someone who still prefers a disc player, while USB or digital files can be more convenient for computers and compatible televisions. Compatibility varies by device, so describe how you want to watch the recordings and ask which output is appropriate for your needs.
- Make a simple list. Note the approximate number of tapes and any formats you recognise.
- Keep the originals safe. Bring tapes in their cases where possible; avoid heat, damp and repeated playback attempts on uncertain equipment.
- Choose an output preference. Tell us whether you are interested in DVD, USB or another supported option.
- Ask before making a special journey. Use the form below or call if you have unusual formats, a large collection or visible damage.
